Screw Caps Galore!!

It was bound to happen sooner or later.  After dabbling with screw caps for many years, Wild Goose bottled its entire 2010 white wines (and Blanc de Noirs) under screw cap.  Though it was not an easy decision, we jumped full bore into the project.  With the positive response from the consumer and media that we have been having recently towards screw caps, the decision was made and no cork pullers will be needed for our 2010 whites!  We still are using natural corks on our red wines and a decision will be made next spring as to whether or not our 2010 reds will be” screwed or corked!”  We will keep you posted!

2010 Mystic River Pinot Blanc Wins 7th Lieutenant Governor’s Award!

It is with great excitement that Wild Goose Vineyards and Winery announces that it has won its 7th Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in British Columbia wines, since the inception of this competition in 2003!  This year the 2010 Mystic River Pinot Blanc was one of only eleven B.C. wines to garner this greatly respected award!

The Lieutenant Governor’s Awards are one of the most difficult wine awards to win in the wine industry. This year only 11 awards were handed out to the 309 wines entered!  Wild Goose Vineyards has won more Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence then any small winery in British Columbia! These awards are given annually to the top wines in British Columbia.

The Honourable Steven Point, British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor, will visit Wild Goose Vineyards on July 29th at 9:30 AM to present Wild Goose Vineyards with this award. You are cordially invited to attend this ceremony with the Kruger family, staff, and friends.

In 2003, the then Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, consulted with wine industry professionals throughout the province to establish the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in British Columbia Wines. The awards program recognizes and honours excellence in wines made from 100% grapes, grown and processed within the province.

The annual competition, supported and primarily administered under the Government House Foundation, calls for entries at the end of March. There is no fee to enter a wine; however, each winery is limited to four entries. Three bottles of each entry are required and a tasting panel of wine critics/journalists is held in the middle of June.  The panel selects eight to twelve wines that, in their view, have achieved “excellence”. Winners are announced in July and the Awards are presented later in the month. Winning wines are entitled to use the Lieutenant Governor’s Award logo for advertising.

2010 Wines Now Available!

It has been a long time coming, but I can assure you that the wait will be well worth it!  We have now released the 2010 vintage of white wines.  Although the overall vintage is down in size, the quality is outstanding!  Despite the challenges that we all faced with the 2010 growing season, the adjustments we made in the vineyards to crop size paid off in a big way.  Winemaker Hagen Kruger says, “with the beautiful September and October that Mother Nature gave us, it made up for any short falls that we suffered earlier in the year, the fruit concentration is unbelievable with this vintage!  The natural acids of the 2010 vintage give a lovely back bone to the wines making them some of the best wines we have seen from the Okanagan in years”

The new releases include:

  • God’s Mountain Riesling
  • Riesling “Classic”
  • Mystic River Pinot Blanc
  • Blanc de Noir(limited release)

Double Magnum Winner!

Through the fall months we ran a raffle for a “Double Magnum” of Autumn Gold 2009.  The winner of the wine was Bob from Naramata, B.C.!!  All of the proceeds from this raffle were donated to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Moog and Friends Hospice House in Penticton, in the name of George Wilson, our great friend, grower, and neighbour, who passed away in September.
